Journée Paroles et Manœuvres: Resistance and Enchantment

Special event

October 17th 2015, 2pm to 7pm

Journée Paroles et Manœuvres

In the spirit of exchange and reflection, Skol invites the public to participate in Journées Paroles et Manœuvres. A cross-disciplinary meeting of interventions, conferences, performances and discussions, this event aims to inverse roles, to encourage collaboration between different types of expertise and to support hybrid forms of communication. Journées Paroles et Manœuvres is an opportunity to take time, together, through various forms and ideas.

Resistance and Enchantment

Considering the witch hunts of the 17th century as a decisive turning point in the birth of our present-day capitalist society, Resistance and Enchantment proposes an encounter with communities whose beliefs and practices are rooted in the pre-modern era.

Drawing their strength of resistance from magic, animism, ritual or ancestral traditions, these communities offer us opportunities for critical reflection and possibilities of reappropriation and healing.

“It is a question of cultivating the strength that allows for healing in a world that makes us all sick, honouring the sources of healing, and being able to articulate a collective kind of intelligence.” – Isabelle Stengers, in reference to the neopagan witches involved in the movement Reclaim.

Schedule

– 2PM : VIDEO BY NORMAND GREGOIRE, SERIE 4, 1972, 7 MIN 29 S.
This experimental short documents the clash, sometimes obsessive, sometimes glorifying, between humans and their mechanized environment.

– 2:30PM: CONFERENCE BY DAVID KUSSENS. WITCHES, DRUIDS AND ANCESTRAL MYTHS: ANACHRONISTIC RESISTANCE TO MODERNITY?
It was long believed that, with the arrival of modernity, systems of belief would fade away into the past. However, since the 1960s, it has become clear that structures of belief did not collapse with the modern triumph of reason and science. On the contrary, religion is alive and well. How are we today to understand these phenomena? Hasn’t modernity itself turned out to be a particularly fertile breeding-ground for the growth and mutation of innumerable forms of belief?

– 3:30PM : CONFERENCE BY T. SCARLET JORY. PAGANISM & WICCA: ADDRESSING TODAY’S WORLD ISSUES
New religious movements rise when the current religions no longer meet the needs of the people, or the people find that the religion no longer addresses the concerns they are facing. In our modern word, these concerns are: the environment, gender equality, diverse sexuality & sexual identity, the impact of secularism on spirituality, the need for a sense of collectivity & belonging. Paganism, and more specifically Wicca, are among these spiritual movements that have risen in the last 60-80 years to face these issues and create change within individuals, groups, and the world.

Meet T. Scarlet Jory as she introduces you to Paganism and Wicca, and as she discusses how these religious movements address today’s concerns,
