Ann Hirsch: Scandalishious

Project Description
An immersive video installation representing various aspects of a performance published on the YouTube video-sharing site, in which the artist plays a young student named Caroline—aka Scandalishious. Beyond the performative, the installation explores the construction of gender along with the mediatization of human relationships through systems that rely on their users’ insecurities and fantasies. The process, which has the effect of blurring the identities of the artist and her character, leads Hirsch to the following conclusion: I AM WATCHED THEREFORE I AM. This exhibition is presented in a text by Felicity Tayler.

Ann Hirsch is an amateur social scientist, professional microfamer but mainly a performance artist whose recent projects include The Scandalishious Project in which she paraded as a college freshman on YouTube. With over one million hits on her videos she gained Internet notoriety as a faux hipster “cewebrity” ( Youtube.com/user/scandalishious and scandalishious.com ). Hirsch’s newest performance can currently be viewed online at Vh1.com as a contestant on the reality dating series Frank the Entertainer…In a Basement Affair. She was recently an artist in residence at the Contemporary Artist’s Center in Troy as well as at the Atlantic Center for the Arts in New Smyrna Beach, Florida where she studied with Obie playwright winner Heather Woodbury. She is currently pursuing her MFA in Art Video at Syracuse University in Syracuse, New York.
