JOURNÉE PAROLES ET MANŒUVRES: TI-POP LE QUÉBEC

Multidisciplinary event

Saturday, November 25th,  2017 at 2 p.m.

Journée Paroles et Manœuvres

In the spirit of exchange and reflection, Skol invites the public to participate in Journées Paroles et Manœuvres. A cross-disciplinary meeting of interventions, conferences, performances and discussions, this event aims to inverse roles, to encourage collaboration between different types of expertise and to support hybrid forms of communication. Journées Paroles et Manœuvres is an opportunity to take time, together, through various forms and ideas.

Ti-Pop le Québec

In the current context of globalization and massive migrations, is it possible to imagine Québec as  distinct, francophone, yet open and welcoming?

Between Québec Bashing, closed-minded forms of patriotism and the obvious shortcomings of the politically correct, can a convening path be opened up?

Without a specific thesis or slogan, Skol’s Journée Ti-Pop explores these questions through reflection, dialogue and humour.

(Original version in French)

“What is Ti-Pop? Well, ‘Ti’ is Québécois, as in ‘Chez Ti-Jean Snack Bar’ (Lil’ Jean’s Snack Bar), Ti-Lou Antiques (Lil’ Lou’s Antiques), or simply as in ‘Allô, ti-cul’ (Hi, lil’ guy). And ‘Pop’ is Pop Art. But it’s not just about art. It’s more about a culture, our long-standing culture, which should be called ‘Ti-Pop Culture’. Ti-Pop is an attitude. Fundamentally, it’s about conferring aesthetic value on objects from Ti-Pop culture. Do you get it?” – Pierre Maheu, founder and main theorizer of the Ti-Pop movement, 1966.
