Project Description

After her residency at Centre de sculpture Est-Nord-Est in Saint-Jean-Port-Joli, French artist Séverine Hubard will be exhibiting in Skol’s new space. This exhibition is the first to crystallize a promising collaboration between Est-Nord-Est and Skol. We have sought to highlight work that might not otherwise have had immediately visible results. Other exchanges with Est-Nord-Est are planned.

Hubard’s work meshes well with our theme this year, which dwells on the human and on constructed environments. Her practice involves different forms of construction and deconstruction, what she calls “subversive bricolage.” Either at home or abroad, she reinterprets urban or domestic spaces by steering materials away from their initial function. Having never seen the Skol exhibition space, Séverine first worked from its cauldron-shaped floor plans and imagined “cooking up a shack”; she then drew from the architectural vernacular of the Chaudière-Appalaches region to devise its form. Typically, her pieces “playfully parasitize” the spaces she occupies — an inclination that will take shape in their encroachment upon Skol’s offices and hall.
