We are pleased to present RÉELLES FICTIONS / REAL FICTIONS, a collective exhibition that brings together the work of five Canadian artists in the gallery’s nocturnal ambience.
Featuring a brand-new scenography that plunges the gallery into darkness, this first exhibition of the 2024-2025 season invites visitors into a world where reality and fiction intersect: an exploration of night, of parallel worlds, of dreamscapes and of sensations heightened by obscurity.
In contrast with the transparency of day, the depths of night offer a refuge for those of us seeking privacy, escapism or simply a space to dream, far from our day-to-day realities. In this space-time’s generous opacity, our five senses are freed from the excess of daytime stimuli and acquire a new, heightened sensitivity. Each sensation, subtle though it may me, can thus take on a greater intensity, giving each experience a dreamlike character.
Rooted in a hybrid world, between reality and fiction, the works displayed in the exhibition all attest to the peculiar power of night. In this space-time-refuge, the expectations of our contemporary world (to consume, to produce) are momentarily suspended. Despite the growing pressure to remain open, awake, productive and stimulated 24/7, night and its parallel worlds still offer some resistance to the imperatives of our time. It is this same fertile resistance, located in a dream world between reality and fiction, that the artists featured in this exhibition enact through their works.
Press release - 09.09.24Aurélie Blanchette Dubois (born in Montreal in 1988) is a multidisciplinary artist living between Geneva and Montreal. A graduate of HEAD Geneva (2019) and Concordia University (2013), she explores painting, digital collage, video and textiles. Her work examines the dynamics of authority and alienation between humans, objects and images. She has exhibited in Lisbon, Geneva and Nuremberg, and is the recipient of several awards.
Matthew Cangiano (b. Hamilton, 1991) lives in Toronto and is presenting his work in Quebec for the first time. His practice, plagued by a profound dualism, questions “the mystery of otherness”. Through his paintings and drawings, he seeks to transcend the limits of subjectivity and provoke encounters with objects, ideas or landscapes, in a dialogue between interiority and exteriority.
Alex Coma (b. Granby, 1991) is an interdisciplinary artist living between Spain and Canada. A graduate of Concordia University and the Académie des Beaux-Arts de Montréal, he explores the intersections between inner consciousness and spiritual constructs. His work, influenced by Beuys and Jung, has been presented in various spaces in Canada, the U.S. and the U.K., including New York and London.
Philippe Léonard (b. Montreal, 1982) is a filmmaker, media artist and projection designer. With a degree in film production (MFA) from Concordia, he works between expanded cinema and experimental documentary. He has collaborated with bands such as Godspeed You! Black Emperor, and his work has been shown internationally.
Francis Macchiagodena (b. Laval, 1993) is a visual artist based in Montreal. With an MFA in Studio Arts from Concordia (2020), he has exhibited in various cultural venues since 2016. His recent series Mers d’argent was presented at the Maison des arts de Brompton and at the Plural Art Fair.
