Julie Bélanger explores the influence of place and territory on the imagination. Her practice is playful and intuitive; it deploys varied strategies for apprehending territory in works that can be  site-specific or ephemeral, sculptural or pictorial. She favours a predominantly experiential approach that is rooted in her work on materials. Bélanger conceives artistic activity as a means of resisting capitalism, consumerism, and “attention economics” (Citton, 2017 [2014]), a position she supports through a practice of attentive presence that aims at a sensitive reappreciation for the living. He approach is also inspired by Taoist notions of nonaction, non-desire, and emptiness.

Julie Bélanger holds a master’s in visual and media arts from Université du Québec à Montréal, where she is currently pursuing a doctorate in arts studies and practices. She has presented her work in numerous group exhibitions, including at the Centre d’exposition de Rouyn-Noranda, Musée Laurier, Musée des beaux-arts de Mont-St-Hilaire, Maison Culturelle Armant Vaillancourt, and in many galleries. Her work was also featured in several solo exhibitions, the latest at Galerie Popop.
