Project Description
Together with Le Mois de la Photo à Montréal, under the artistic direction of Martha Langford, Skol presents Lacs, an exhibition of large-scale colour photographs by artist Catherine Bodmer.
Conceived as a follow-up to the 2004 series, Déplacer des montagnes (“moving mountains”), these new images owe everything to the power of the imagination. Here, the image of a vacant lot submerged in melted snow is transformed by subtle manipulations into a strange, contemplative mountain landscape. Imagination is called upon again with the reading of legends from the artist’s native Switzerland, overlaid onto the photo in small print. And in the depths of the waters lie fabulous creatures as evocative of unconscious fears as of the imaginative world of the child. Closer to our day-to-day reality, the images invite us to transfigure, rather than flee, the dull or depressing scenes of spring in the city. Extending the play on scale and subverting the mythical mountain landscape, Bodmer has provided a series of souvenir postcards of the work to complement the exhibition. This exhibition is presented in a text by Pascale Baudet.
