THRESHOLDS: A CONVERSATION BETWEEN ARTISTS NIK FORREST AND FRANCIS MACCHIAGODENA

Visual artist Francis Macchiagodena and multi-disciplinary artist Nik Forrest will come together at Centre SKOL for a public conversation exploring the intersections of their practices, particularly their shared investigations of revelation and space. As an extension of SKOL’s current exhibition Real Fictions, the discussion will echo the theme of darkness that underpins the show, using it as a catalyst to examine both artists’ approaches to abstractions of natural phenomena.

Through dialogue and example, Macchiagodena and Forrest will delve into key concepts within their individual practices, particularly the role of performativity in their work, with a focus on the act of recording sound and light. Drawing on visual references as well as conceptual and philosophical writings that inform each artists’ research, the conversation will explore materiality— a central concern in their respective artistic practices. In discovering and responding to each other’s explorations of optical and auditory limits, they will decode and expand on technical and conceptual manifestations of emergence, force, tactility within their works. Through this discourse, they will offer a verbal conduit through a physical approach of understanding existence and experience within multisensorial space, acknowledging our envelopment within a plethora of both detectable and undetectable frequencies and spectrums.
