AU-DELÀ DE L’INVISIBILISATION : L’EXCLUSION TRANSMISOGYNE COMME OUTIL DES LUTTES FÉMINISTE ET QUEER

*event in French

The dominant historical interpretation suggests that trans women were absent from feminist, gay, and lesbian activist spaces in Quebec prior to the emergence of the transgender movement in the 1990s. However, this comfortable narrative is challenged by archival records. These instead point to political tensions within gay and feminist groups surrounding a deliberate transmisogynistic exclusion. Seeking to destabilize normative narratives, Aurélie Chouinard, a historian of trans women’s struggles, and Judith Lefebvre, a transfeminist activist, will discuss the importance of exclusion as a political tool within feminist and queer movements, as well as in the formation of an autonomous transfeminist movement.

Aurélie Chouinard (she/her) is a master student in history at Université Laval and a committed transfeminist poet. As a historian, she studies the evolution of transfeminine activism in Quebec, as well as the communities that have emerged from it.

Judith Lefebvre is a transfeminist activist. She co-founded the Mouvement transféministe (MtF) and the now-defunct Agenda cooperative. She writes a biweekly column for the online media outlet Pivot.
